Two men work alongside each other on a construction site. They both work a long day in all weathers assisting the tradesmen. At the end of the day, they both go home. One man returns to his new wife and 8 week old baby daughter in their rented flat. The other man returns to his parents house where he lives.

The week rolls on and each day, the two men do exactly the same job, exactly the same hours, exactly the same tasks. They work together. They tire together.

At the end of the week, come pay day, one man receives £8.91 for each hour he has worked. The other man receives £6.56 for each hour he has worked.

Why the difference? Both men receive National Minimum Wage but one of them is 25 years old and one of them is 20 years old. Someone, somewhere deems that the younger man deserves less reward for putting in exactly the same amount of effort.

Is that fair in 2021? His wife and 8 week old baby daughter certainly don’t think so. It is time to stop discriminating on the basis of age and calculate a wage based upon the value of the job and pay everyone completing the job equally.
