What does it mean? Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a method used by the counsellor where the client is helped to change the way they think and behave. The client is encouraged to accept the aspects of their lives and the episodes in their lives which they cannot change. CBT accepts that thoughts, feelings, actions and physical sensations are laced together and so negative thought and feelings can supress positive actions and trap the client in a vicious cycle. 
 
Working with the counsellor, problems are broken down into smaller manageable chunks to address. The counsellor and client work on what is happening now and what the client wants to happen in the future as there is control over these environments. The past is gone and cannot be changed and therefore should not be dwelt upon or used as an excuse for today.
